a question to all regulars and edds it got me thinking about the documentary i watched last night about reporters in rwanda, could anyone see ethnic cleansing in the uk if things got really bad?

Britain has had periods of ethinic cleasing, civil uprisings and civil wars over many centuries just as we see in Africa today. From Britons and Celts at the hands of invading armies to the Welsh, Irish, Scots, Catholics, Protestants and Jews all suffering displacement, torture and genocide at the hands of the ruling classes.
We've also seen an economic cleansing the most recent started in the 1980's. I suggest we'll see more of that in the coming years until this current 'crisis' is over.
Nothing should surprise us when it comes to humanities inhumanity to their fellow man or indeed its ability for compassion and innovation.

I know it has in the past, i mean now in a so called civilized democracy .

Given the right circumstances. i.e. A total economic collapse and the answer is yes. Immigrants would be singled out first. Then the so called 'feckless' sections of society. Religious and racial tensions could be ignited. The Daily Fail expects this scenario each day on its pages and website and is used to fuel those predjudices. If good people do nothing it will be allowed to happen.

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't think it will happen in the UK because you persons gave up your guns. The greatest amendment every created was the 2nd.
On another note Britain has a major problem with immigration and I dont see anything good happening in the foreseeable future.

so any comments on events in russia and the death of free speech? The state of russia today is increasingly a worry. Increasingly right wing, free speech and protest more and more clamped down on.

It is everywhere mate, it is just more subtle in other places like over here.

So what do people think of the pussy riot thing?

Agree0 Disagree1

Right wing isnt a bad thing completely

Agree1 Disagree1

I liked all the mainstream news reporters today who speak the "queens english" looking uncomfortable having to repeat the word "pussy riot" lol. Theyre obviousley trying to make an example by locking them up, It would have probably been worse in China or North Korea

matt_rfc you usually talk a lot of sense but i do disagree with some of your recent comments. I don't agree with comparing britain to nazi germany. Its a more ethnically diverse society to start with and i don't see individual sections being marked out for persecution. If you think things are bad in britain you should try some places in europe, especially if your black or mixed race. I do agree with your comments regarding the jubilee and crowds of people cheering for a family of billionaires as a non monarchist myself. But the olympics was good to see hard working dedicated people who make better role models than the types of people you see on reality shows such as that essex rubbish and the rest.

I'd rather my kids try and be jessica ennis rather than charlotte off geordie shore. And Mo was a great example of what immigrants can bring to the country rather than the usual negative daily mail crap. The olympics showed what we can be because of our differences not despite them. Not very nazi germany. I agree that there are things in history that were dark. But i am not going to be embarrassed about something that happened years before i was born. I didn't do it i don't agree with it but i'm not going to be ashamed of it.

Look at the ways society has changed so much for the better. What does annoy me is how people only ever single out the english. The spanish almost exterminated a whole continent and had to import labour front africa. In a trade that yes this country profited from but a trade this country also stopped. How about the americans and how the massacred the original settlers? I could go on every major power in history has blood on its hands but also bought benefits. Its the old what did the romans do for us sketch. I'm sure people will argue back, thats your right. I'm just saying that dark deeds happen, history is full of it. The point is to prevent history repeating. Thats the mistake mankind makes largely because instead of learning the lessons their too busy trying to lay blame.

Good post (leave your name mate) i see both point of views ,the difference is you are intelligent enough to know things are not right.

I do like the olymics and other sprots, my sons at a decent level in football and I encourage that. What I ment was "Brand Britain is Amazing PLC" was rammed down our throats at every given oppurtunity and as long as theres soaps on the TV and a cold beer in the fridge, people lap it up as if were something special. Anyway, glad to be making people think about certain things

watched a great program on virgin and have to admire the reporters who go were there is unrest cant remember what it was called but it made me ill watching some scenes because i was not expecting mainstream media showing executions and a scene of a young boy about 7 getting slapped around and being told he will get one of hes hands chopped off because they think he is a sniper ,i like a few people since the internet has become available have seen some very dodgy stuff but you sort of prepare yourself for it,desensitization on mainstream outlets now is becoming the norm and i don't think its right.
